Agreed. If engrams had simply had numbered levels instead of colors that matched the rarity of gear then it wouldn't have felt so deceptive. To some extent it did work. When I've gotten a blue from a green engram I've been quite pleasantly surprised. But the random downgrades and the fact that the majority of purple engrams did not result in purple loot, was really no bueno.
So the code worked as intended, but the net result was not quite what was intended due to poor communication from game to player, as mentioned. There are going to be a lot of little things like that. When you work on a project all the time and know intimately how it works it is startlingly easy to lose sight of how well, or poorly all that information is actually communicated to users, because when you already know all the answers it seems self evident to you.
The issue was also not really revealed in the alpha or beta due to level caps.

Yeah it gave far too many greens, which explains why I have about 500 lots of Sapphire Wire for my Hunter (dismantled green armour), while my other two characters will get nowhere near that much.

Hi all,
The good things in the game is the shooting/ graphic and music. I don't see however (compared to other large games/ content) how this verifies the amount apparently invested into it. 500 million dollar development costs seems like a serious overkill for what we can see/ access today. That's double the amount of EA/ Biowares Star Wars The Old Republic with absolutely no story/ character creation/ like only 1/3rd of classes/ content to even compare it with and they had serious voice acting which was a "next gen element" to begin with and let's not mention that one was created for PC and another for fixed console hardware settings. 2 weeks into the game and I barely meet anyone else on the first two planets... considering that they sold over a million units and that people are going back to the same planets .. where are all the people? Are all PS4 player on the same server/ is a server location automatically given to your position? These planet events which happen every so often, it can happens that there is nobody even around to do them. Given that the same guys did create the Halo franchise... (which I played only partially) it clearly doesn't add up to what anyone should have expected without "hyping" anything. This game has to stand up to current shooters/ wanted to set new standards and it clearly doesn't. Grinding is fine but not getting nothing for invested time. 0 reward for more effort than others is illogical at best. RNG is fine but don't give worse items if it's suggested that you get a better one (which they are going to fix).
I'm expecting a lot more pvp modes/ maps... I love TheHawkNY's idea of a survival mode.... brilliant idea and that doesn't even require a lot of work. Just increasing spawn rate and see who is the best at it... can be the same map/ same hole even where endless masses of monster crawl out from.
Story... crap the story, better not having anything than having something cut and glued back together in no order. That's bad with good stories but seriously bad with bad stories.
Let PvE/ PvP level "their" way without forcing either to engage into the other's area.
Balance PvP/ PvE (if it needs fixing), add more game mods on existing maps and only then go over to new map designs etc.
Decrease the length of operations (6man team pve content) .... everything longer than 2 hours is too long nowadays... majority of people won't engage if they have to take several hours to a day off to do 1 operation.
Overall... tweak what we have and make it sound before adding tons of more content without seating the core play nicely in the center and let everything evolve around it. What Destiny is lacking apart from that... I can play small team CoD or large scale Battlefield and Destiny so far it seems like a small team FPS with much less perks than CoD and not enough "new things" to not compare it to that. Are we going to see some large scale battles in the future?

Destiny didn't cost 500 million to make. Activision has made a 500 million dollar investment in the franchise over a ten year period, starting with this first game.

They made a contract for 4 destiny games over the next 10 years, however the sum listed above was an initial investment, not the total cost of the entire process and with Modern Warfare and GTA V costing anything between 200-300 million dollar... it's not unlikely that Destiny cost anything in between that and the above (which includes marketing as well so I should have mentioned that as well prior).

They may have very well put down 500 million at the start, but it wasn't just for this initial release.

First of all, I am not disagreeing that the Destiny can use more content, so don't call me fanboys for what I am about to say That said, I find it a little amusing that most of us fans fell to the marketing trick ATVI CEO deployed. By simply dropping the 500 million number long before the release, and deliberately leaving out the details, he created a very effective and long lasting marketing splash without spending a cent. Brilliant, I must say. We as fans on the other hand should not be concerned about how much money they have invested, since it's not our money they spent. We only need to judge whether the current content is worth the 60 bucks we spent. Is it a great bargain? No. Are there enough content to justify the price? Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I would say definitely yes.

Destiny didn't cost 500 million to make. Activision has made a 500 million dollar investment in the franchise over a ten year period, starting with this first game. There are some accounting semantics going on, but the $500 million was the actual cost directly spent to make this game from my understanding of things. Costs including money to lock up Bungie, R&D, Rights, developing costs and Advertising/Promotion. The money is spent and gone. The point with the ten year number is that some of the above costs can be recouped down the road if they make sequels. For example, some of that signing bonus spent on Bungie, can be expensed (Accounting wise) in later years. Other costs maybe also will not have to be included either, thereby possibly lowering development costs on the sequels. As to whether that $500 million is to much for the amount of 'stuff' in this game? Who the fvck knows. You have to first take out Advertising and Promotion (amongst many things) and we have no clue what those #s are. IMHO, no end user consumer is even remotely qualified to offer an opinion on that. There's to much we don't know about.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I would say definitely yes. For what its worth... I'm enjoying the space oriented Mass Effect lock alike game called Destiny which I think only looked at as it's widely advertised in the Playstation Store so I thought... why not. As for the longevity of the game... contracts are made with several clauses so I wouldn't be surprised if Activision can pull their support in case Destiny isn't causing enough people to play it. Everyone is everyone else's darling as long as the money flows.

If Destiny doubles down on the PvP, it will be in trouble. Restating what's been said many times, the PvP has issues. Adding more crap to a flawed system won't make it better. If Destiny was mostly about PvP right now, I would have already traded in this game. And that's not just coming from a CoD Fanboy. That's also coming someone who has played all the Halo games. Halo's PvP is far FAR superior to Destiny imho.

Well, what you said might happen too. Who knows. Bungie might think their PvP system is great, and more of the same is needed.

Other developer did change their 3 year old game over night to a complete different experience (SOE) and experienced the probably largest drop of players/ time in the history of games. Since then... everything seems possible.
Edit: as I read through their contract... read between 8.2c) and 8.3
In the event Licensor (Bungie) fails to deliver a Project Review Deliverable designated a Critical Risk or an approved mitigation plan therefor by the second quarterly Project Review following the Project Review in which a Critical Risk has been determined, then Activision shall have the option to either terminate this Agreement pursuant to Section 17.2 (except in the case of a Critical Risk on a PS3 version of a Product, .....) without any opportunity for Licensor to cure, notwithstanding anything to the contrary in Section 17.2 and so on......
I don't doubt that they will milk until it's dry but they won't hang for the after party... just in case.

Also apparently the PvP doesn't have voice chat or something? Foxtrot that. I kinda like the experience of not hearing kids that should have parental controls squeaking all over. A surprising amount can be conveyed with the dance/point/wave/sit system and its use is much more entertaining and palatable than voice chat with people in game.

Hearthstone not having a direct chat system with strangers is a fantastic design choice. Toxicity is low.
On Destiny the average stranger is a pretty cool guy. People point out chests and dance.
Strangers start talking? Bad stuff happens. Party chat is always a thing for friends. No need to worry.

I'm still a bit clueless as to how the chat system works in this game. Can I talk to randoms who do strikes with me?

I think alot of developers have been looking at the amazing things that Journey did with the online multiplayer experience...
Gee....people are super friendly when they can't actually talk to each other.

It would seem by the time I use my character to point at oncoming enemies, standing and pointing over and over... ...my random teammates already know they are there. :-(

I think the radar is doing that pointing job just fine.

Dumb question:
The only other MMORPG game I played was DDO online. In that game, you could pull up a menu to look for a group, with a certain level/class requirements that was advertising doing certain things (material farming, raiding, questing)
Does Destiny have that? Can I advertise that I am going to do vanguard mission on the cosmodome and have people join me in those?

I'm still a bit clueless as to how the chat system works in this game. Can I talk to randoms who do strikes with me? Only chat is with people in your fireteam. To check your fireteam hit the start button (or whatever they call it now) and hit LB. 1st column is fireteam. 3rd is just the people in your game/instance, at first I had this confused with fireteam... led to a lot of talking to myself.

Destiny Tracker (the PvP/PvE stat site) has a LFG section. Many people use that.

I usually go for the sit animation on dead bodies rather than the T-bag. In my head I think it means, "Sit down you scrub". Many people just go for the dance over the dead body.

So, there's websites, but no ingame "LFG" section (aka: looking for group)?
that sorta sucks.... but I guess it makes the importance of clans that much more

I believe you can talk to strangers in the weekly heroic strikes. Seemed to have happened to me last week when doing Venus.
