Ascendant energy is used to upgrade legendary and exotic weapons, shards for legendary and exotic armor.
You get both the same ways as far as I know. That is, first gold completion event per day, per character is guaranteed and often nets you one on completion and one in the post... usually shards more than energy in my experience. Also you can randomly get them from events, probably have to complete with gold as well, though... not that that's a problem.
I believe they are also rewards for heroic stuff, but not sure whether weekly and daily or only one or the other.
Also from dismantling legendary or better gear, though I don't think either of us are up for doing that yet.
And of course the raid.
There's a thread that lists how to get all the different things...

You won't be far behind at all.... in a month, even if I have a maxed out character, I'll still be grinding the Cosmodrome Because? Because I can >:> Or maybe.... maybe....... maybe, I'll start a new character EDIT: $hit... I can't beleive i forgot about that witty light thread... thanks!

You really should start up another character. If nothing else you could use them to run daily events for the first gold. Use destinypublicevents.com or an app like Destiny Timers for Android, drop to the cosmodrome and go hit the first one to pop. You can usually get your first event done in 5 to 15 min easy and even if that's all you do on that character it's good for one or two guaranteed ascendant materials per day per character.
If you duplicate your main class then once you grind them up to level 20 you can always drop your gear to them via the vault for an extra shot at the raid, nightfall, and weekly and daily heroic missions.
Or if you make them the other classes (as I have) you'll have characters to drop gear on when it inevitably turns out to be for the wrong class since raid gear drops and engrams will often do that. And you can still farm the events for ascendant materials. My other characters are still lower level so you won't have to be totally lonely as well. I'm sure you can catch up since I almost never play my Titan and I keep my Hunter around my bro's level. (He's a couple levels ahead of my Hunter now so I have some leeway to play without him now.)
Also we should try (I did say try) to start doing those daily heroic missions. Lots of XP to turn into motes, ascendant materials, new one every day, and we knocked those out pretty easy! Dude! I may not be able to play every day, but I don't think they will take that much time so maybe I can get close.

Yea......
It's more of a mental thing. As silly/pathetic as it sounds, whenever I play a MMO (and yes, I know Destiny isn't a "MMO") I generally stick to one character. I did that in DDO and I did that on the various text based MUDs that I played. I take my time during character selections, as I know that really, what I choose is what I'll stick with. Even when various nerfs/buffs happen to a class, I stick with that character through thick and thin. Back in those days, I sorta frowned upon people with alternate characters and delibrately picked text MUDS that you couldn't multicharacter from any IP address (this was back in the day... anywhoo)
So, while I understand the benefits of the multiplayer and transfering stuff between... it's more of a mental block that I need to get over.

If it bothers you then just clone your main so you effectively are playing the same character in all three slots. ;p

Warlock has Fireborn, Titan has Ward of Dawn while Hunter has Goldeneye and Mortal Kombat throwbacks. Melee isn't good when playing Nightfall, and I assume Raid, because you are risking a death IMO.

I haven't gotten to high levels with it, but I kinda enjoy my hunter more than my titan. Just do for some reason.

That's basically been my experience as well. Golden Gun is great for taking out oracles and supplicants quickly in the Atheon encounter. Invisibility is great for cheesing the gorgon's maze. Arcblading across the jump puzzle makes that part really easy also. Only 1 of those 3 things is actually useful at all. Otherwise Hunters don't bring much to the table.

I guess stealth revives are useful for Nightfall/Heroic strikes, but they're worthless in the raid. Self-rezzing is better anyway. So, yeah.

Hunter has style . Golden Gun, throwing knife, blade dance, etc: can't deny that they look cool, and the cape is the biggest eye candy of class items. Seriously speaking, Hunter is more of a PvP class than PvE. If you look at the PvP leaderboard on destinytracker, a large percentage are Hunters. In PvE, seems to me Gunslinger is more useful than Bladedancer.

I might make another warlock and go pure sunslinger....
Besides, it'll be easier to transfer eq..... power level to 20, transfer 1 warlock set of eq to the other... bang, instant level 27.
It slices, it dices, it makes julienne fries... just add water, it makes it own sauce.... BUT WAIT, THERE"S MORE... if you call right now... because we can't do this all day, ya know... with another update, I'll add a 3rd warlock subclass... all for the price of one class

This way you can progress much faster. You can always replace the 2 body doubles with other classes once you are "done" with Warlock.

Question: Ascendant shards.... I have 4; how do I get more? Raids (I assume) Ascendant energy... I have 19; Never used them. What do I use them for? According to the Destiny wiki: Ascendant Shards- "The following provide a chance at rewarding Ascendant Shards: Public Events, Legendary Engrams, dismantling legendary or exotic armor, daily story mission, Loot Chests, completing sections of the Vault of Glass, and completing Crucible matches. However, certain pieces of legendary armor, like those acquired from The Queen's Wrath missions, do not yield Ascendant Shards when dismantled." Ascendant Energy- "Ascendant Energy is a legendary material in Destiny. It is used to upgrade legendary and exotic weapons. The following provide a chance at rewarding Ascendant Energy: Public Events, decoherent or legendary engrams, dismantling legendary or exotic weapons, daily Heroic mission, Loot Chests, completing sections of the Vault of Glass, and completing Crucible matches."

Is it worth equipping armour with more intellect/discipline/strength if one of those is already at 100% or would there be no buff to the cooldowns?

It would only be good to go over if you're going to level up and use the same armor, because it takes a higher stat to achieve 100% at higher levels.

After hitting level 3, the vanguard dude sent me a present: The Comedian: a pretty purple void damaging shotgun. But this time I was smart: I equipped it first before handed in my 3 bounties (see: I'm learning!!!) I did some quick glimmer upgrades. Then I took it to the cosmodrome to take his baby for a drive.
First impression: What a total, utter piece of utter dogshit. I am sosososososososososososososo glad I didn't waste 150 VM on this sack of complete waste of a weapon. No range, 4 bullets and a eff of a long reload. And worst of all: even close (for me) range, the piece of shit doesn't even put down a level 4 dreg. The only benefit I can see is that it has Void damage, so when Mannon and I go back to Venus, I might be able to hurt more of those effing minotaurs with the void damage... before they kill me because the fucking shit on a stick only has 4 shells. Honestly... for a purple weapon, it sucks complete monkey balls.
Question: Bros: what am I doing wrong? Is there some sort of button I need to push to engage beastmode? Now, I am a mid/long range killer in both COD and Destiny... do I have to be even closer to get kills? Do I have to see the whites in their eyes before I fire? Or should I just do some more cheap glimmer upgrades to it, then break it down for mats and get a real weapon? Are other shotguns good but it's just this one?

Most of the shotguns are near useless for PvE in my experience unless you're on patrols or messing around against low-level enemies. If you're not jamming the barrel down their throat, you're probably not killing in one shot. The raid shotgun, Found Verdict, is pretty good though. Haven't tried it in PvP yet, but it should be beast there. Great range and impact for a shotgun.

Shotguns are good in PvP and I like to use them when I can, but generally not great in PvE at all. I haven't gotten any purples, but in PvE I usually only use shotguns when I know I'm up against thrall and use them as a backup weapon to keep them off me. You want to wait until they are right in your face and still aim for the head/neck area so you get some pellets in the head. If you don't take down a thrall with each shot you better get to high ground. Use melee for filling in while you reload. Having said that, fusion rifles actually work better since you can often kill multiple thrall per burst and at longer range. Honestly for PvE I don't know anything a shotgun does that isn't done better by a fusion rifle. Which is why I have 3 fusion rifles (each element) but only one shotgun. (3 sniper rifles, 3 fusion rifles, 1 shotgun leaves me two spaces for special weapon loot... not a lot, but I get by.)
Mebbe hang on to it for Crucible. We both still need to hit that for our exotic bounties. (If you haven't completed 5 strikes without dying yet we should do that. It's fast and easy to run Devil's Lair 5 times, that's what I did.)

Um....... I deleted it by accident. And by accident, I meant that because I found out it was a shotgun at the end of the reward chain, I deleted it on purpose. Because eff shotguns. But I got another: Torland's something which will give me Bad Juju.... so I have one. But the vanguard rewards looks very promising tonight... 4 of the 5 are very very easily obtainable: 1. Defeat Septks Prime 2. Get a gold ranking in a public events (5 I think) 3. Kill 10 fallen majors or ultras 4. Melee kill 30 enemies without dying Gonna be some gewd grinding toonite!!!!

Also, you got another one that fast?
Does the game replace your exotic bounty if you drop it or does it just supply the next one pretty quick? Or was Marko lucky? I ask because mine is a shotgun I'll rarely use so I want to know if I'm better off finishing it quickly to hope for a new exotic bounty, or dropping it to get a new one immediately?

My experience on exotic bounties:
1) I got the Pocket Infinity one first, completed it, and no bounties for a while; 2) I got the same set of choices on a different character (Warlock), I chose the Bad Juju one because Warlock gets bonus when working on that bounty; 3) Soon after I got a different set of choices on a different character, this time I chose Invective; 4) While both 2) and 3) are still being worked on, I got the same set of choices as 1 & 2 on my 3rd character that did not have any exotic bounties. Needless to say this time I went with Super Good Advice;
Current situation: I have 3 active bounties, 1 on each character, all at the last stage. After I complete them, I will only have the Thorn one left. There is supposed to be another one for a Scout Rifle, but I haven't heard anybody getting it yet.
Observations: Bounty drops appear to be completely random.

Next question...
And this is an embarrassing one...
When it comes to events, I got my thing going quite nicely. Defending that Warstat? Consider it defended! Prevent those extraction crews from stealing the precious glimmer of the Cosmodrome? They may as well not even start! They must be able to buy Devil Walkers on the cheap cheap cheap for me to destroy 2 in an hour... or maybe they have Star Trek Replicator technology?
But... when it comes to the event of eliminating a target... well, bros... it's with a heavy heart and an embarrassed red face, when I come to you and say that unless there is someone else with me... well... I just can't put the fucker down.
Yesterday, the cold reality hit me when I realized I had a problem, as I (a 27) emptied my whole arc damaging MG into the Captain, plus 19 solar damage sniper headshots, plus 3 grenades and 2 nova bombs...... and I think I took off maybe a 1/3 off his health bar. Now, I haven't used a void damaging weapon on him, and I have a green machine gun waiting to do so.... I'm not a sniper assassin, but my aim isn't it... I'm hitting the f$$ker, but I'm not hurting him.
I even went to the moon and tried taking out a target... a wizard. Same $hit, different location.
Is it the void damage? It's gotta be.... right?

It's extremely difficult to take down a VIP when playing solo. These fvckers have magic shields that are bullet sponges and can replenish very quickly. The biggest one is the minotaur in Buried City on Mars, that robot is seriously unbeatable solo. A few tips: a) You MUST use weapons that can take off the VIP's shield, preferably heavy that are legendary or plus, with enough ammo. Have a few heavy synthesis in your inventory can help greatly; b) This is the time you want to use your "offensive" subclasses: Gunslinger, Voidwalker, or Striker; c) When all else fails, Dumien suggests to keep punching him. Apparently this can keep the target from escaping and can still earn you gold finish, at least sometimes; BTW, if you think VIP assassination is hard, you should really go to Venus and try those "Vex sacrifice prevention" missions . VIP ones are pale in comparison in terms of difficulty when playing solo. These suckers are really devoted to their gods...

Hell, last night, it was me a 27, a 6, a 7, and a 12.... and we absolutely murdered the Captain in no more than 45 seconds. Unless those 3 had alts and had transferred over weapons that their alt got.... there should be no reason why the 3 of them, at levels when added up, still don't get as high as mine... should make that big of a difference. the only way I can justify it, is that if someone is being scratched to death 1 on 1, they can defend themselves easier... but being scratched 1 on 4.. that's worse. I'm just so embarrassed....
